I originally organized these notes by subject.

Environment. History. Witness testimony. Scientific literature. Personal observations.

It seemed sensible.

It also failed.

The most interesting relationships consistently ignored those boundaries.

Eventually I stopped asking: What is this document about?

Instead I began asking: What role does this document play?

That small change reorganized everything.

The structure became less intuitive.

It also became considerably more useful.

I still do not know why.
