0001 / FIELD NOTE

Why This Exists

If you're reading these notes, then you've already invested more effort than most people would.

That may not seem important, but I think it is.

Curiosity is becoming an increasingly uncommon thing. Not because people lack intelligence, but because there is always something louder demanding their attention.

If you have made it this far, then you have probably noticed that I have been careful with my language. That is intentional.

I have no interest in convincing anyone of extraordinary claims. In fact, I spent years trying to convince myself that nothing extraordinary had happened at all.

The notes that follow were never intended to become public.

Most were written simply so I could remember where I had found something, why I thought it mattered at the time, and what alternative explanations I had considered before moving on.

Over time those notes became difficult to navigate.

Connections appeared between subjects that had originally been filed months or even years apart.

The index was created to solve that problem. Nothing more.

At least, that is what I believed when I began.

Most of these documents prove nothing. Some are almost certainly irrelevant. Some may eventually turn out to be incorrect.

I have deliberately left many of them here because removing mistakes creates the false impression that understanding arrived all at once.

It did not.

If there is one thing these notes represent, it is the slow accumulation of uncertainty.

As my confidence in individual explanations declined, my confidence in the existence of an underlying pattern slowly increased.

Those are not the same thing.

If you read these notes looking for proof, you will probably leave disappointed.

If you read them looking for a story, you may find one where none exists.

Read them the way you would examine the scattered remains of an old road.

A single stone tells you very little. A dozen stones begin to suggest a direction.

Only after walking that direction for some time do you discover whether it was leading anywhere at all.

I do not know where this road ends.

Everything that follows is simply a record of how far I have managed to walk.
